The Real Reason Your Ears Feel Clogged (And Why Cotton Swabs Are Making It Worse)

That stuffed-up feeling in your ears is frustrating — and reaching for a cotton swab is almost everyone's first instinct. The problem is that cotton swabs don't fix the issue. For a lot of people, they're the cause of it.
Your Ear Actually Cleans Itself
Earwax isn't a sign of poor hygiene. It's something your body produces on purpose — it traps dust, bacteria, and debris before they can reach your eardrum. Under normal circumstances, wax slowly works its way toward the outer ear on its own, helped along by everyday jaw movements like chewing and talking. You never even notice it happening.
When you stick a cotton swab in, you interrupt that process. The ear canal narrows as it goes deeper, so the swab pushes wax past the point where it can exit naturally. It compacts against the canal wall. Do that enough times and you end up with what's called impacted earwax — and that's when symptoms start showing up.
It's one of the most common problems we see at Audiological Services. The fix is almost always professional removal, not more swabbing.
Symptoms You Might Be Overlooking
Earwax buildup doesn't always feel like an ear problem. Many patients come in describing issues they'd dealt with for months without connecting them to their ears at all. Here's what buildup can actually feel like:
- Muffled hearing — sounds feel distant or like you're underwater
- A plugged-up feeling — pressure or fullness that won't go away
- Earaches — dull pain or pressure inside the ear
- Ringing or buzzing — new sounds that weren't there before
- Dizziness — your ears play a big role in balance, and blockages can throw that off
- Hearing aids acting up — if your devices suddenly seem less effective, wax is often the culprit
If any of those sound familiar, your ears might be telling you something worth paying attention to.
Why DIY Removal Can Backfire
Cotton swabs are only part of the problem. Ear candles, drugstore irrigation kits, and small picks or scoops all carry real risks. Without the right training and a clear view inside the canal, you can irritate or even rupture your eardrum — and the distance between the opening of your ear and your eardrum is shorter than most people expect.
Even a trained professional uses a light source and magnification before doing anything. That view isn't optional. Working without it means working blind, and that's when things go wrong.
How We Remove Earwax Safely
At our Lufkin clinic, we use the Earigator™, an advanced irrigation system that uses a controlled flow of warm water to soften and flush out wax gently. No digging, no scraping, and no discomfort for most patients. It's thorough and typically pretty quick.
For stubborn wax that doesn't respond to irrigation, one of our specialists may use a curette — a small instrument with a looped tip designed for exactly this kind of work. The difference between a professional doing this and attempting it yourself at home comes down to visibility and training. We can see precisely what we're doing at every step.
Before we start anything, we also examine your ear canal and eardrum with an otoscope. Sometimes what feels like a wax problem turns out to be something else — and catching that early matters.
A Simple Home Remedy for Temporary Relief
If you're dealing with significant discomfort and can't get in right away, mineral oil can help take the edge off. Place two or three drops in the affected ear, lie on your side for about five minutes, then gently wipe any excess from the outer ear with a soft cloth. Repeat for three to four days if needed.
This softens the wax so it can work its way out more naturally. It won't clear an impaction on its own, but it can make things more comfortable while you wait for an appointment.
Ready to Feel Better? We Can Help
At Audiological Services, we've been helping patients across Lufkin and East Texas with earwax removal, hearing evaluations, and hearing healthcare for over 27 years. If your ears feel clogged, your hearing seems off, or your hearing aids aren't performing the way they should, it's worth having someone take a look.
Most patients are surprised by how fast they feel relief — and it starts with getting the right care instead of reaching for that cotton swab.
