Nacogdoches, TX
In addition to the six flags flown over most Texas cities, Nacogdoches, TX also flew the flags of the Magee-Gutierrez Republic, the Long Republic, and the Fredonian Rebellion. Agriculture and lumber were early economic staples that helped attract the Texas and New Orleans Railroad spur into town, contributing to our community’s importance in East Texas and its establishment as the county seat of Nacogdoches County.
Diboll, TX
Timber and the production of lumber from the Piney Woods of East Texas was such an important part of the early economy of Diboll, TX that our community was named after a timber salesman; J. C. Diboll. The early boom days of Diboll revolved around the Southern Pine Lumber Company mill built adjacent to the Houston, East and West Texas Railway.
Crockett, TX
Crockett, TX was named for the American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier, and politician, Davy Crockett, who camped near the site on his way to the Alamo. Incorporated in 1837, Crockett is the fifth oldest town in Texas and the county seat of Houston County, the oldest Texas county and was originally connected by stagecoach to Nacogdoches until the railroad came to town in 1872.
Livingston, TX
Established as the county seat of Polk County in 1846, Livingston, TX is located on the eastern shore of Lake Livingston on the Trinity River. The early economy of Livingston depended on crops, like wool, sugar, molasses, and sweet potatoes, but was also heavily influenced by timber production throughout Polk County in the early 20th century.
Jasper, TX
The Butterfly Capital of Texas, Jasper, TX was named for William Jasper (a Revolutionary War soldier killed in the storming of Savannah in 1779) and established as the county seat of Jasper County in 1844 before Texas was annexed into the United States in 1845. Jasper’s 20th century boom followed the arrival of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway making our community an important center for the manufacture of timber products.
